There are many herbs that have been shown effective in helping to control diabetes. The list of herbs that follows have been studied and shown promise in lowering blood sugar levels, reducing high blood pressure, helping manage insulin sensitivity, and lowering cholesterol levels. Of course, these herbs should be taken along with making changes in one's diet and adding exercise to one's weekly routine.
Bitter Melon- Bitter melon has demonstrated ability to lower blood sugar levels, especially when taken in the juice form. Bitter melon is thought to work by helping cells use glucose more efficiently and to block sugar absorption into the intestine.
Gymnema Sylvestre - this Indian Herb's Hindi name translates to 'sugar destroyer' and those ingesting the plant say it lowers the ability to detect sweetness. It is regarded as one of the most potent herbs for blood-sugar control. The herb is thought to work by increasing the activity of enzymes in the body that help cells use glucose or possibly by stimulating the production of insulin.
Bilberry - Bilberry has long been used as a tonic in protecting the eyes and nerves. This herb is a relative of the blueberry and contains powerful antioxidants in the fruit and leaves. The antioxidants, known as anthocyanidins, are thought to prevent damage to tiny blood vessels that can result in nerve pain and damage to the retinas of the eyes. Studies in animals have suggested Bilberry may help lower blood sugar. Bilberry was given to British pilots during WWII to help improve their night vision.
Prickly Pear Cactus- helps to lower blood sugar. This herb can actually be eaten as a food. Aim for 1/2 cup of cooked cactus fruit per day. Prickly Pear cactus fruit has been shown to lower blood sugar levels. It can be found in the fruit section of many grocery stores, or can be found as a juice or powder in health food stores. In addition to being high in fiber, it contains elements that work similar to insulin within the body.
Ginseng- Ginseng has been found to help lower blood sugar levels. In addition to its immune-boosting and disease fighting benefits, this herb has been studied extensively for its help in controlling diabetes. Studies have shown it slows carbohydrate absorption, increases the cell's ability to use glucose and increases insulin secretion from the pancreas.
Fenugreek - The seeds of this herb are often used in Indian cooking and have been found to lower blood sugar, increase insulin sensitivity and reduce high cholesterol. The seeds also seem to contain an amino acid that boosts the release of insulin.
Cinnamon - this popular herb has been getting a lot of press lately with its blood sugar lowering qualities. Just a half teaspoon per day of cinnamon can help the body's insulin sensitivity and lowers glucose levels in the blood. It also seems to have an effect on lowering triglycerides in the blood and the levels of 'bad' or LDL cholesterols, while at the same time raising 'good' or HDL cholesterol. This is thought to be due to cinnamon containing Methylhydoxyl chalcone polymer which helps the body's cells absorb glucose and convert it more efficiently to keep blood sugar levels low.
