Is it safe to use Tea Tree Oil in Pregnancy?
· Tea tree oil in pregnancy is generally regarded as safe during pregnancy and lactation when used topically and when used appropriately. This means tea tree in pregnancy is safe when properly diluted. Using tea tree oil in pregnancy at full strength should be avoided. Full strength, undiluted tea tree oil is usually only used to treat nail fungus infections.
· There have been some laboratory studies that have indicated tea tree oil in pregnancy could possibly force spontaneous contractions in laboratory experimental uterine tissues exposed to tea tree oil. Therefore caution should be used when using tea tree oil during childbirth.
· Undiluted tea tree oil in pregnancy can cause toxicity and lead to some severe side effects.
Side effects from undiluted, full strength tea tree oil can include:
· Disorientation
· Mental confusion
· Inability to walk
· Full body skin inflammation
· Can cause dryness, stinging, burning, redness and itching when used on the skin to trea acne
How Do I Use Tea Tree Oil In Pregnancy?
· Tea tree oil in pregnancy should only be used in a weaker, diluted form rather than at full strength.
· Tea tree oil in pregnancy can be used to treat athlete's foot when used topically in a 25 to 50% tea tree oil solution twice daily for one month
· Tea tree oil in pregnancy can be used at a 5% solution for treating acne
How Does Tea Tree Oil Work?
· Volatile compounds within the tea tree leaves kill bacteria and fungus, while at the same time keeping natural skin flora healthy
· In laboratory tests, tea tree oil stops the grown of Candida albicans, a type of yeast infection.
· Tea tree has also been shown to be effective in killing and inhibiting drug-resistant strains of the pneumonia bacteria.
· Tea tree oil reduces skin inflammation caused by allergies through its ability to moderate an over-active immune system response.
